Detailed Summary
Good evening, everyone! I'm thrilled to share some exciting events coming up in our community as we celebrate Black History Month from February 1st to March 1st. This month-long observance is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the contributions and legacy of Black Americans throughout our history. We have a range of activities planned that I encourage everyone to participate in. First up, we have "Breach of Peace," a powerful play performed by Mike Wiley, taking place on February 1st at the Halle Cultural Arts Center. This piece draws from true stories of individuals involved in the Freedom Rides and the fight for equality. It's free to attend, but you'll need to register for your ticket. Later in the month, join us for a fun-filled Trivia Night at the Apex Senior Center on February 12th, where you can test your knowledge and enjoy some light refreshments. Additionally, we are proud to host a Learning Lunch on February 19th, featuring the Green Book Project exhibit, which highlights the experiences of African American travelers during a time of segregation. And for those who enjoy a little friendly competition, mark your calendars for our Spades Tournament on February 21st, where you can win some fantastic prizes! Finally, don't miss the United Strings of Color performance on February 28th, showcasing the rich history of Black classical music. Let’s come together to honor and celebrate our history while enjoying these engaging events!

“The Negro Motorist Green Book,” published between 1936 and 1966, was both a
travel guide and a tool of resistance designed to confront the realities of
racial discrimination in the United States and beyond. The book listed over
300 North Carolina businesses—from restaurants and hotels, to tourist homes,
nightclubs and beauty salons—in the three decades that it was published. The
exhibit highlights a complex statewide network of business owners and Green
Book sites that allowed African American communities to thrive, and that
created “oasis spaces” for a variety of African American travelers. -

What is the difference between a Community Event and a Town-Organized Event?

Community Events
This is an event that a non-profit organization runs, pays for, and plans.
Town of Apex staff provides an event location (Town Hall Campus, Salem Street,
etc.), along with staff from public safety, public works and other
departments, as necessary.

Town-Organized Events
This is an event that the Town of Apex creates, pays for, and plans. Town of
Apex staff manages the programming, including activities, logistics, and
vendors. This is sometimes referred to as a “Town Owned Event”.
